Our commitment
SmallClaims.com exists to make small claims court easier to navigate for everyone — including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or other assistive technology. Legal self-help only works if it is usable by the people who need it. We design and test this site against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.
Conformance status
SmallClaims.com is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. "Partially conformant" means most of the site meets the standard, with the known exceptions listed below. We treat accessibility as an engineering requirement, not a one-time project: automated checks run on every code change, and issues they surface block release until fixed.
How we test
Every change to the site runs automated WCAG 2.1 A/AA checks (axe-core) against a sample of each page template, plus keyboard-navigation tests that verify interactive features can be reached and operated without a mouse. A broader weekly sweep covers additional state, court, guide, and tool pages. Our color palette — text, links, and buttons — is verified mathematically against WCAG contrast minimums, and links inside text are underlined rather than distinguished by color alone.
Known limitations
Official court forms are PDF documents published by the courts themselves. Many were not created with accessibility tagging, and we are not permitted to alter official forms. If a court form you need is not accessible to you, contact us and we will help you get the information another way. Some pages also link to external court and government websites whose accessibility we do not control.
Compatibility
The site is built with semantic HTML and is designed to work with current versions of major browsers and screen readers, including VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS, on desktop and mobile. It does not require a mouse, specific screen size, or JavaScript-heavy interactions to read core content.
